Mary, her husband and dogs go on regular adventures to the beaches along the beaches in California, Oregon and Washington.
The beaches are lined with driftwood, shells, stones and other magnificent ocean material. Each trip to the beach yields a new collection of material used to designed these wonderful crosses.
Each driftwood piece is carefully designed using dried seaweed, various types of Sea Shells including Abalone, beautiful Sea Stones, Moonstones, Jadeite, Sea Glass and driftwood. Each cross has a different combination of ocean material used in its design.
The procedure for preparing and designing each cross is more difficult than you would think. First, the wood has to be selected. Selecting a the size and the shape of the wood is important. All driftwood is different and comes from many different sources. After each piece of wood is examined it has to be dried in an oven. The drying process kills any creatures that might have taken up refuge on the beach. The next step is to dry the seaweed and select a decorative piece of shell, stone, or sea glass to place on the cross. Once everything is in order Mary puts the piece together with great care.
Mary
sees driftwood differently than most people. She says
the wood talks to her telling her if it is a cross, Snowman, Santa or
some other unique piece. Her designs have become collectors items
throughout the United States. She has been producing creative
carved art for over 30 years and she puts love and attention into
each
piece she designs.
